ABOUTME
RAT — Radically Authentic Trans
The name BetaRat is more than a playful bit of wordsmithing.
RAT stands for Radically Authentic Trans.
It’s both a declaration of identity and a philosophy about how I choose to live. Being radically authentic doesn’t mean having everything figured out. It doesn’t mean being fearless, infallible, or immune to criticism. It means being willing to examine yourself honestly, acknowledge uncomfortable truths, challenge inherited assumptions, and make difficult changes when the person you’re becoming can no longer comfortably coexist with the expectations placed upon you.
My gender transition has been one of the most profound experiences of my life. It has brought extraordinary moments of joy, discovery, and personal liberation. It has also brought grief, uncertainty, strained relationships, discrimination, and the uncomfortable realization that not everyone who loves you will understand the choices you make to live authentically.
I don’t pretend those experiences are simple. And I don’t believe that authenticity comes without consequences. But I do believe that a life spent performing someone else’s version of who you should be is a life in which something essential is lost.
I would rather navigate the difficulties of being myself than return to the comfort of pretending to be someone else.
That, to me, is what being radically authentic means.
